Day 19 (6/19/14): Salt Lake City, UT

Justin wanted to give me a tour of his hometown. Our first stop was a place he’s been telling me about and craving for years: Glaus Bakery as he knows it but technically Glaus French Pastry Shoppe/Beau Brummel Bakery, a tiny little bakery tucked back between a tire shop and an office building. Justin was salivating as he ordered his favorite desserts: white cake with raspberry filling and chocolate cake with pineapple filling and chocolate rum icing.

We then drove around the Sugar House neighborhood, one of Salt Lake City’s oldest neighborhoods with well-maintained, quaint cottage-like and craftsman-style homes.  Loved the architecture of these homes with their turrets and sloping roofs! If I lived in Salt Lake City, it would have to be in this neighborhood! However, the home prices are rather steep.

Next, we had dinner at Ichiban Sushi (CLOSED). The restaurant has an enchanting setting inside an old church with stained-glass windows and wood ceilings.

After dinner, we ventured over to the Gilgal Sculpture Garden, a public city park filled with intriguing stone sculptures linked to Mormonism and created by LDS businessman Thomas Battersby Child, Jr. While we didn’t visit the garden for religious reasons, it was still fascinating to see the lovingly crafted sculptures.

From the sculpture garden, we drove through downtown Salt Lake City and ended up at Memory Grove Park where we ate the last piece of cake we had saved from Glaus Bakery.
